On the 12th of January 2007 Fracoise Hickey from the Tipperary Energy Agency came to the school to talk to us about the benefits of conserving energy both here in school and at home.

We played a game with her which taught us lots of things we should know.

Did you know?

What is energy?

Energy is all around us, and we use it for everything we do. However we don’t really see it. Energy is constantly being used up and changed into different forms. There is energy in everything we do and in everything around us.

What is an energy resource?

Energy makes things happen. An energy resource is something that can be used to provide energy. There are 2 types of energy resources: renewable energy resources and non renewable energy resources.
For example, water is an energy resource. It can be used to turn waterwheels or turbines.
Wood, peat and coal are energy resources which can be used in a fire to make us warm.

The Sun

The sun is our greatest energy resource.
All of our energy comes from the sun:

It shines on us to keep us warm.
• It shines on trees and make them grow.
• It shines on crops and grass which we use for food.
• It shone on trees and other plants millions of years ago. These died and decayed into peat, coal, oil an gas.
• It warms up the air. And hot air rises, causing air to move in the form of wind.

Food gets its energy from the sun.
The sun shines on crops like wheat causing the plants to grow. They store this energy as chemical energy. Our bodies use this chemical energy to keep warm, to move about and to think.

The sun is a renewable resource.
